• Genesee Ave.

The light. That golden, electric sunshine that gives the city its color, its insanity, its charm and its mystery.

I moved to 1017 Genesee Ave. on February 16th, 2006. I was starting my third year in Los Angeles after fleeing my native Minnesota. By that point, I’d given up on writing screenplays and spent much of my free time roaming around Los Angeles making pictures.

I had no idea why I was still in California. It didn’t feel like home or a place that I’d spend the rest of my life. I knew my experience in Los Angeles was going to be short, ephemeral. This was the first time I understood the nexus between photography, experience and memory.

As the months passed, the need to document became more urgent. I was detaching from Los Angeles and California. I knew that eventually all my memories would be in the photographs.

On November 13th, 2008, about a week after Barack Obama was elected President of the United States, I packed a rental car with all my possessions and left Los Angeles, heading east for the next chapter in my life.
