American Road Ghost
The death of family members hung over my road trip during the summer of 2007. I’d left my job and was uncertain of where I’d end up. I flew to New York and spent a few days with friends before taking a Greyhound to Memphis where I spent the 4th of July. From there I rented a car and made my way through Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before finally heading back to Los Angeles. I wanted to make a series of black and white photographs as a homage to Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Walker Evans and Robert Adams. Perhaps it wasn’t so much of a homage, but a detour from where I was going. The cult of the American road trip weighed on my mind as I went from destination from destination searching for photographs.
